Sneak preview of the Barker Historical Museum......

As you enter the Barker Historical Museum you will be greeted by the current exhibit "Photographers of Fredonia." Once you spent some time viewing images of early Fredonia you will come upon a room that is a replica of a Victorian Parlor. Many of the items on display were used by the Barker Family, all of them are from the Victorian era and earlier.

The portraits above the fireplace in the picture at the right are of Leverett and Desire Barker. It was Leverett who built this home in 1821 that is presently the Barker Historical Museum. Fortunately for the Village, Darwin R. Barker, son of Leverett and Desire Barker, donated his home for the public’s benefit. His only request was that the portraits of his parents remain on display above the fireplace mantel in this very room.

The photos below are some of the other items from the Barker Museum's Collection that are presently on display.

This is an example of a Dutch Style Dollhouse filled with miniatures that capture
the imagination of children as they try to find various things collected by Captain Pierce, a fictional sea captain, who filled his home with many strange and wonderful objects he collected as he traveled the seas.

The Belden Gallery features portraits of early settlers to Pomfret
painted by Alvah Bradish as well as household furnishings.

The quilt featured in this photograph was a project of a children’s program.
Children selected a favorite photograph from the collections and it was reproduced
and became a quilt block that represents pieces of time in the history of our community.

A walking spinning wheel, a butter churn made in Fredonia, a washing machine and many other items on display in the Children's Museum tell us what life was like for these early settlers.

We cannot show you all of what we have
on display at the Barker Historical Museum. To see the rest
